Ayurveda and pragnaparadh

In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian holistic system of medicine, ayur means life and veda means knowledge. Hence Ayurveda is the science or study of life. According to Ayurveda, one of the causes of illness is called pragnaparadh. This can be translated literally as ‘mistake of the intellect’.

When you know you’re making the wrong choice but go ahead anyway, this is a mistake of the intellect. You realise that sugar is bad for your diabetes but you still choose to have a second serving of chocolate cake. You know that being angry with your children for a trivial incident is unnecessary but you still choose to become angry. Or you know that accepting a bribe for a business favour is an unethical action, but you still go ahead and accept it. These are all examples of pragnaparadh.

Pragnaparadh can be avoided by having a mind that is clear and a will that is unwavering. With an unclouded mind free of distortions and bias, the best possible choice at any given moment can be made. How that mind of clarity is created depends on each individual. There is no one size fits all. Every individual is unique and requires a different cocktail to function optimally.

A very physical person may require vigorous exercise, whereas a very analytical person may need to delve into the subtleties of philosophy to arrive at the same goal. While a ten-day silence retreat may suit one person, another person may require ten days of intense physical exercise. This fact allows every individual to chart their own way, depending on their own individual temperament, where they are in their life, and what methods they respond to.

Only the individual knows what they need. This is a refreshing notion for many people who wonder why they may not have benefitted in the same way as a friend or family member from various spiritual, yogic or meditation practices.
